Design & Technology

All students in years 7 to 9 follow a Design & Technology course. This involves them in a series of designing and making tasks, working with, wood, metal, plastic or food. In year 9 students are taught in half form group sizes to maximise their teaching and learning experiences and allow students to really flourish in this practical subject. In all years the emphasis is placed on enjoyment and producing work of quality by developing some practical skills

The department has three full time and one-part time specialist teachers of Design and Technology. In addition, we have a term time Design & Technology specialist technician. There are three practical workshops. Each of the workshops have wood and multi-purpose wood and metal benches. Each workshop has floor mounted machines and a range of bench mounted machinery is shared. The multi-media room has 20 computer stations, with several further computers in workshops. Computer aided design and manufacture is offered through a range of 2D & 3D milling machines, a card and sticker cutter printers and a 3D router.

The department sits adjacent to the Art and Food Technology rooms.

Key stage 3

Year 7

Students are involved in researching, analysing, designing, making and evaluation tasks. These are covered in three projects, a balancing toy which is predominantly a wooden project, an electric loop game and a card board game and package.

Assessment, using the 9-1 grading system, is two-fold, firstly students produce written and free-hand drawn booklet, covering each of these projects in turn, then the practical outcome itself.

Year 8

Students research, analyse, design, make and evaluate their projects, through three separate projects. An aluminium key rack, a plywood clock face or picture and an ergonomic handle project. Assessment, on a 9-1 grading system, is through a written, free-hand drawn booklet with practical tasks being assessed also.

Year 9

Students are involved in researching, analysing, designing, making and evaluation tasks. Three projects are covered, a dovetail wooden box, a plastic gadget tidy and a computer aided designed and manufactured jewellery project.

Assessment is through a hand written, free-hand drawn booklet and practical tasks are assessed on the 9-1 grading also.

Key stage 4  

AQA 8552 GCSE Design & Technology

Year 10

Students are involved in a series of short practical skills tasks and computer aided drawings. In autumn an aluminium barbecue flip, involving, marking–out, cutting, riveting and bending, also a pine wooden storage unit involving the use of stopped housing joints. In addition a series of theory topics are covered through text book exercises.

In spring of year 10 a bridge building exercise, cam mechanism cat and an electronics project. Assessment of these projects is internal only and based on the 9-1 grading system.

In the summer term students start their actual GCSE external assessed project involving researching, analysing and designing, chosen from an AQA exam board list of projects.

Year 11

This design, make and evaluate project continues through into year 11, autumn and spring terms, here students detail their final design through working drawings, culminating in a practical and lastly written, photographic evaluation, over the autumn and spring terms.

In the summer of year 11 students revise for their forth-coming 2hr written paper, drawing terminal examination in June.

Assessment of this course is 50% design, make and evaluate coursework extended task and 50% terminal 1 x 2Hr written exam.

Key Stage 5

Year 12 & 13 A Level OCR H406 Design & Technology Product Design

Students are involved in iterative design and creative processes, to explore, create and evaluate, preparing learners to become critical, creative and innovative designers, engineers and consumers of the future.

Assessment is three-fold;

26.7% Principles of… 1hr 30 minutes Written paper.

23.3% Problem solving in… 1hr 45 minutes written paper.

50% Iterative Design project, 65 Hrs.

In the iterative design project students are involved in working on a single extended project, a research, analysis, design, make and evaluate task. Here students are required to produce their own design brief, working with a client to research and analyse a problem. Then to design, model and make a working solution, culminating in a marketing strategy of the product and final client and student evaluations with further suggested improvements.

Outside the classroom

Coursework for GCSE and A Level is to be carried out in lesson times under teacher instruction, although research can be collected for homework.
Students are expected to collect research and continue their classroom studies outside of lesson time through further reading and exam preparation.
